Sui Wu'u or Bogi (Ngadanese local food)

Sui Wu’u or Bogi

Sui wu’u or Bogi is a unique culinary from Ngada, would certainly get addicted. Sui Wu’u is preserved pork is traditionally mixed with cornstarch and salt stuffed in bamboo (tuku). People who make Sui Wu’u are skilled women. The pork fat part cut size a fist and then washed clean. Other materials that have been dried corn starch and salt to a nice taste. Then the material was arranged sequentially into the bamboo that had been cleaned. It filled the double decker, maize, meat, corn flour and meat again. And then the bamboo is place in a rack. To produce the Sui Wu’u with taste tempting should be kept about three months recently opened to eat. It could also be less or more than three months. The skills are needed due to Sui Wu’u produces quality and delicious, to be able to mix the ingredients of meat, flour and salt with the proper rules. The do not right mix not only can make Sui Wu’u or Bogi tasted delicious, but also easily damage or wormy, thought stored for months. There is a motto; the longer stored the more tasty and delicious to eat. Sui Wu’u raises distinctive aroma. If the meat is burnt, people can distinguish the scent Sui Wu’u with the scent of freshly killed pork. The aroma could increase the people appetite.

The uniqueness of the Sui Wu’u or Bogi can reduce the bitter elements in the leaves of papaya and passion fruit to be eaten. How then the burned Sui Wu’u dripping oil dropped sufficiently to papaya or passion fruits leaves. As a result the leaves are eaten, not bitter. The manufacture of Sui Wu’u it has meaning. Economically, shows the meaning of their savings. The Sui Wu’u or Bogi provided meat to indigenous people to get it when do the rainy season has coming. To these months the events needed to get meat have no chance. So, the local people still have the Sui Wu’u which saved for some months ago.

In ancient times, the availability of meat is very limited, so to eat meat usually occurs only when there are traditional events, such as Reba, Sagi, Ka Ngadhu, Ka Sa,o and Ka Nua. The meaning of other customary of Sui Wu’u is that foods are offerings to the ancestors. In the growing season, usually Sui Wu’u stored in every corner of the garden. Its function is to repel pests that plants are free of pests and harvest could be overflow. There is a belief of Ngadanese that when creating a Sui Wu’u no one can saw it. Watu Rere (a folklore from Soa-Ngada)

WATU RERE

Long time ago in Nua Seso,it was a small village in Soa District of Ngada Regency, there lived a girl named Watu Rere. She was a beautiful and kind woman. One day, (Bue ghale one nua papa utu) or the girls in the village gathered to go to a group work (Ngo umu or loa bapo). In a group worked, they agreed “If the group members go to work in a garden or rice field, the group member must brought lunch box such as rice, vegetables similar, and also if the worked shift with good friends”. When they would work for wages the group worked member must brought rice, vegetables mixed coconut milk. In this agreed, all members did it, but Watu Rere was just brought rice (kana nika) and the sour vegetables without coconut oil (uta kana). When Watu Rere asked to her father and mother or brothers and sisters, they did not say anything and just looked her calmly. When harvest time, all the result of her worked always brought them to her house as the earning for her family.

One day, Watu Rere went to do work with the group worked member in a garden. As her lunch box, she just brought the rice (nika kana) and also the sour vegetables (uta kana). Watu Reres’ friends showed their solidarity to their friend Watu Rere. Her friends loved her so much. They said to Watu Rere that it was not ashamed if you brought your rice and vegetables only as your lunchbox. It was okay, did not worry about that. When her friends brought delicious lunchbox, it made her sad and she just cried and said” Watu Rere, Watu Rere asked to father, asked to mother, asked to brothers and sisters but they did not say a word, oh, what a pity you are Watu Rere, Watu Rere” she said. She sang an oat while sat on a rock or stone called Loka Kedhu, Suddenly appeared a strange man.  “Oh friend, did not cry, why you looked so sad?,” said the strange man. I just cried because my family refused me. How did not I sad, I asked rice and vegetables they did not give me, replied Watu Rere. The man said, alright. After that the man disappeared. Watu Rere spoke to herself. The handsome boy I called Rere Wula or Hoga Lizu.it means the man came from the heaven. Watu Rere kept calm but the stone on her sat suddenly has been raised to the top. Her friends talked “no Watu Rere, go back, but she would not”.


        The stone up a high in the sky and the door was opened to her. All her father – in-law, mother – in – law said welcome to Watu Rere. They said “oh, good morning, our sister in – law” all of them pleasant at all. Rere Wula was already there with her charming boyfriend that she called Hoga Lizu or Watu Rere.

        It was already a week, people from her drove prepared for her wedding which was already to the wedding ceremony. The Belis or Mahar (as the wedding wages on a custom) attributes were prepared such as buffalo, goats and sheep, dog, chicken and horses, the chains goal called Loda ( like a gold necklace) . After that Watu Rere and Rere Wula downed to the earth and brought the materials as Belis. The rock door opened and the collected materials for Belis or Mahar began dropping to her father - mother and also brothers – sisters on earth. After her father – mother and brother sister gave a Mea (a symbol of thanks). Rere Wula parent realized of the behavior to their beloved daughter and said “ your life will be blessed and pray to for your brothers and sisters he”. They started for the eating and drinking, getting the meat as the consumable used the animals were killed earlier, and then Watu Rere and her husband Rere Wula wearing the ethnic fabrics. The next day, they went back through Watu ( a stone) back to their village in sky and they lived as the family happily ever after

Kua Siga Wunga ( A Folklore from Ngada))

Once upon a time, in a small village in Ngada of Flores Island, there was a beautiful girl named Bu’e Gae. She was a daughter of a wise king. She was beautiful and shapely, simple, and good natured. One night, there was a charming boy named Kua Siga Wunga. He was handsome and very powerful as the incarnation of a red eagle went into a dream of a beautiful princess named Bue Gae. One beautiful night, the princess woke up and it was hard to close her eyes again. She recently met a young man dreaming mighty and handsome when she was going to fetch water at the fountain bamboo near her home.  Smiling young man who was then fetch water in the fountain bamboo. The generosity of the young man was really captive the princess. “Who’s the boy? Why did I find it hard to forget?” murmured Bue Gae.  The heart of princess’ Bue Gae was very anxious because the smile of charming boy always had over on her eyes. “Ah, this was just a dream, I have to forget the boy, “Muttered the princess again”.

Two months later, miraculously, was only the beautiful princess who dreamed of becoming pregnant. The incidents then caused the princess to be expelled from their village because they have committed acts La,a Sala (unlawful marriage). What was the fate Bue Gae and the unborn baby’s next. Bu, e Ga’e asked herself. Princess Bue Gae knew she was pregnant. He  surprised because she has never been associated with any man. The Princess intended to keep about her pregnant to her parents, but the secret she could not keep long because her stomach was increasingly enlarged so as to arouse suspicion for parents. “Hi, my daughter, why is your stomach so big?” Her father asked suspiciously” well, lest you are pregnant.” Bue Gae shyly admitted that she indeed was pregnant.

Hearing the answer, the father was suspected that his daughter has been violated customary law. “My daughter, who is the father of your child birth?, “father insisted . Bue Gae was silent, and looking down.

  After a few moments, she later told her father that she never at all in touch with a man. “But how can you get pregnant if you never had a relationship with a man?”, Protested the father. “Forgive your daughter my Daddy"! Princess also surprised by the incident. Princess only ever dreamed of meeting a young man mighty two months ago, but the Princess did not know who he was and where he came from,” said the princess in tears. Seeing only daughter crying, the mother, too shed tears and hugged her immediately. The atmosphere of emotion was enveloping the heart of the family. “My daughter, father and mother may be able to understand and believe in your words.  But what about the people here?. Are they too will understand and trust in you?” the father said. Then, how can we convince them?, Said the mother. “The only thing we can do is our daughter had to tell the truth and believed in presence of all citizens. However, I am not sure if this can be successful. Therefore, our daughter had to get ready to leave this village, “Said the father.

Although the Princess Bue Gae has delivered the oath, therefore to keep the customary session decided that the truth of the matter will be submitted to the laws of nature. Based on the decision, then the princess had to expel from the village. On the next day, Princess Bue Gae paraded up to the end of the village towards the sunset. Furthermore, the poor beautiful Princess walking down the wilderness together with her beloved dog named Dala Kuwa. After arriving in exile in the forest, the princess lived with her dog in a cave is quite spacious and livable. A few months later, Bue Gae gave birth to a baby boy. Along with the birth of the baby emerges a beam of light is accompanied by the sound of voice he is the son of sun. Hearing the voice, Princess Bue Gae was taking care of her baby with affection to grow into a brave child. At the age of seven, the child was already adept at hunting and slicing palm wine. One day, when about slicing wine, the child was found the bamboo of wine called Moke or Tuak not contain a single drop of water.

“Hey, who did steal my Tuak?” He murmured. I had to catch the thief.” The next day, the boy and his dog in the early morning hiding under the palm tree wine was.

At mid-day, there came a red eagle perched on the tree. Unexpectedly, the eagle was suddenly shrouded in white clouds, and then transformed into a baby, then a teenager, then a young adult, then a middle – aged man who is authoritative, and finally as a white – bearded grandfather. When the grandfather was dripping his beard into a hollow bamboo palm wine, suddenly, the brave boy was with the lighten speed to catch the old man’s beard. “Hey, kid mighty! I was the one who stole your Tuak (wine), “I’m the old man,” Punish me!” No, grandpa! Because Grandpa was honest, I will not punish, I prefer peace “the boy said. “Boy, you are certainly child who noble and wise. Grandpa proud of you“ the old man said”. “Happy mother who was given birth and raised you”. Grandpa said. “Oh yes, Grandpa, if I may know, my grandfather whom and where comes from?” The boy asked.“ If you want to know about Grandpa, wait two days, Grandpa would come to see your mother and at that time, I will reward a kind of animal that will emerge from the wine tree’s hole. It shall be you give it name is Kaba (buffalo) “said the old man.  After saying this, the old man suddenly changed again to red eagle and fly off into the sunset. Before leaving he had advised the boy. “Oh, my grandson, immediately you leave this place! Soon the sun will set,“ he said.

Two days later, the child was with his mother and their pet dog waiting for the arrival of his grandfather. Suddenly, an eagle was that coming from the direction of the sun and soon landed on palm tree. A moments later, a white cloud enveloped the whole body so that the process of becoming. When Princess Bue Gae watch the process of becoming a red eagle becomes a man, the heart of Princess immediately pounding and the blood flowing very fast. “The young man was ever present in my dreams,” said Bue Gae nervously. After saying this, the princess suddenly fainted. Seeing this, the male was incarnation immediately approached and touched the princess forehead. It was a miracle! Bue Gae immediately regained consciousness and embrace the mighty youth. It has been realized that the young man is the father of her child. Both later explained their relationship to their child.

MENGERUDA HOT SPRING

MENGERUDA HOT SPRING

Mengeruda hot spring is located in Mengeruda village of Soa sub-district. It is about 23.5 km from Bajawa as the capital city of Ngada Regency. To reach Mengeruda hot spring, the visitors can use any types of the vehicles from Bajawa. There are many small public buses called Bemo. The bemo are that running regular to Mengeruda village. The visitors can use other rent cars or motorcycles that occupied in Bajawa. On national holidays are the most crowded people who visit Mengeruda hot spring. The operating time is from 07.00 am until 07.00 pm. The entry fee of the visitors’ are divided into local and foreign tourists. The adult local tourist is Rp4000 and the child is Rp 3000, while the adult foreign tourist is Rp14000 and child is Rp7000. Mengeruda hot spring area has some facilities to support the visitors’ activities such as parking area, changing room and some bungalows. For the visitors who easily feel hungry, there are some local fruits and local foods are served by local people around the area. This hot spring is often visited by the domestic and also the foreign tourists in most of the holiday. This spot offers the highland of the warmest water. The natural hot spring that flows from a river under the shades of trees. The water temperature, it’s about 40 degrees and a little sulfur content in the water. The debit of water which is high enough with own characteristics which are not owned by natural hot spring in other places. The water spring has two main ponds are one open pond is an artificial pond and the other one is closed as the nature pond. Water spring originated from a pond and flows into the main river through the rocks do a bit high, so it looked like a waterfall.

The spring water is believed to have curative effect for those suffering from skin conditions. The indigenous people beliefs that Mengeruda hot spring is usually used for the traditional medication especially for the skin diseases. However, the experience of taking a warm, soothing bath in a beautiful of natural atmosphere is definitely a true delight for visitor. The visitors can be relaxed into a large artificial pool that offers for quite a lot of people. Beside the hot spring, the visitors also can enjoy the beautifulness on the natural scenery.
