Text 1.Development of Agriculture
Agriculture began in the area known as the Fertile Crescent.
The area is a hot, dry desert. But it has two of the requirements for farming: good soil and a water supply.
Many early farmers used the Nile River as a water supply. The Nile River floods at the same time every year.
Farmers planted crops before the
floods. This helped their plants to survive in the desert. Later, farmers created
irrigation ditches. They moved water from the Nile River to their fields. They
could cultivate crops any time of the
year and harvest extra food. Producing extra food was important.
Later, farmers fed animals with it. These domesticated
animals became another important part of agriculture.

East Nusa Tenggara Regional Potential
January 7, 2021
East Nusa Tenggara Province is a
province in Indonesia covering the eastern part of the Nusa Tenggara Islands.
This province has 22 regencies or cities with a capital named Kupang. In terms
of the structure of the business field, the economy of East Nusa Tenggara
Province is still dominated by the agriculture,
forestry, livestock, and fisheries
sectors.
In the agriculture sector, dry land is one of the potential
sectors in East Nusa Tenggara Province which the East Nusa Tenggara Government
and the ministry of Agriculture of
the Republic of Indonesia continue to encourage so it can be developed into a
supportive economy and food security
for the community.
Initially, the prospect of agriculture in East Nusa Tenggara was considered
unpromising and was pushed aside because there was too much dry land. However,
with the tenacity of its people, now East Nusa Tenggara has several agricultural commodities that can be
developed in commodity barns to meet national needs.
In 2019, several commodities from East
Nusa Tenggara were exported to Timor Leste through the National Border Post of PLBN Mota’ain, namely 17.5 tons of soybeans, 5 tons of peanuts, 0.75 tons of green beans, and pepper/pepper, 40 kilograms worth IDR 199.5 million. Even though
the overall value was not large, it was a good indicator for the development of
its business. The other commodities exported to Timor Leste include fresh vegetables, fruits, and shallots.

Strategic Value of Bamboo for the
Nation’s Future
As an institution that has been
developing bamboo conservation and sustainability program, the Indonesia
Biodiversity Foundation (KEHATI)
welcomes the launch of the 1,000 bamboo villages program by the Ministry of Environment and forestry (KLHK). This program is expected to support efforts to revive the national bamboo industry,
while helping to improve the environmental carrying capacity. This was stated by the Director of
Communication and Resources Raising for the KEHATI
foundation, Fadila Astari, when accompanying the Ministry of Environment and
forestry inaugurating the building
where bamboo preserved using smoking
method in Golewa District, Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (3/22). The
building functions as a bamboo field training center and at the same time
becomes the center of the bamboo village community that is already running in
the district. The existence of bamboo plants, said Fadila, so far tends to be
ignored. Many residents chose to cut
down the bamboo grove because it was considered to be less useful and
frightening. Without appropriate action, eventually it will disturb the balance
of the ecosystem. “Thought bamboo has a very strategic value for development. He has an ecologically
vital function and has great potential to support the future economic growth” he said.
Ecologically,
bamboos are very helpful in increasing underground water reserves, as well as
producing oxygen. Its growth is very fast and does not require special care.
Its existence is useful for the conservation of critical lands and watersheds. Bamboo also hold potential
to develop the national economy. In 2016, this commodity contributed exports
revenue worth IDR 6 trillion, and placed Indonesia as the third largest bamboo
exporter in the world, after China, and India.
Indonesia is home to 160 species of bamboo out of 1,200 – 1,400
species in the world, of which 88 are typical species that are spread
throughout Indonesia. The typical species does not grow in other
countries. Bamboo stems can be sold for
logs or processed into a variety of household products, decoration, buildings,
furniture, musical instruments, flooring, toothpicks, incense, and so on.
Meanwhile, bamboo roots are used for various decorations, while young bamboo
shoots can be consumed as vegetables. The bamboo conservation program does not stop with planting, but also includes
post-harvest activities, such as
cultivation training, farmer empowerment,
capacity building, and bamboo processing. This is what KEHATI has been doing in previous conservation activities. In
Flores Island KEHATI supports the
planting of bamboo around watersheds and
springs in West Manggarai, Ende, and
East Flores each with 1,500 seedlings. Source:
